Migration Flows from India to Armenia: Problems and Risks
Opinion

Migration Flows from India to Armenia: Problems and Risks

Recently the migration flows that have especially increased from the end of 2017 arouse concern in Armenia. The flows are mainly from the countries of South and Southeast Asia, most of all from India. It is common knowledge that these countries have large numbers of population as well as high level of poverty.

Economic Issue

So, for people, who live on less than a dollar a day, Armenia seems an attractive country. Consequently there is a flow of cheap manpower from these countries into Armenia who compete with the local Armenian manpower of the same level, but since it is even cheaper, there is a possibility that if competing, the Armenian manpower will be missed out of the market. In its turn it will lead to the stimulation of emigration of Armenians from Armenia.  Considering the fact that currently the vector of development of the Armenian economy is knowledge-oriented, cooperation and implementation of joint programs with other countries to develop high technologies are encouraged, however the flow of migrants from the mentioned India are mainly people without any appropriate qualifications and knowledge.

Demographic Issue

In Armenia the birth rate leaves much to be desired. On the other hand the birth rate in the countries of South and Southeastern Asia, especially among the under-privileged people which number is hundred millions is high. Hence, the uncontrolled migration leads to the risk of demographic disproportion that has dangerous implications.

Safety Issue

It must be borne in mind that in India and altogether in the region in South and Southeastern Asia there is a high rate of crime, also there is religious extremism. These risks must be pondered over considering the fact that Armenia itself is in the state of war.

Do you think Armenia should open its borders to economic migrants, as the Armenians, that are economic migrants in many countries or the flow of the manpower must be stopped, since it can endanger our safety?

Green finger – Armenia should open its borders to economic migrants

Red finger – the flow of the manpower must be stopped
