Shooting from Nakhichevan. Areni Is In An Uproar. Who Is At Fault?
For the past week, the territory of Armenia, in particular, the Tavush marz had been shelled by the Azerbaijani Air Force. Even the localities came under fire and the civilians’ lives were endangered. It should be reminded that the length of the border with Azerbaijan and the Tavush marz is 352 km, and people live right along the perimeter of the border.
We could hardly realize when we were “attacked” from Nakhichevan. From there, they were firing at the village of Areni which is located near the Armenian-Nakhichevan border. The tourist centre with its ancient winery, other attractions, developed infrastructure, constant festivals and an endless flow of tourists was under heavy fire. Although the settlements were not damaged, nevertheless, the people were afraid and couldn’t continue cultivating their gardens.
In response to the question “Why didn’t Armenia appeal to the CSTO regarding the firing?” , the Ministry of Defense answered: “It doesn’t make sense. We do deal with the problems”. Well, then why does the problem remain unsolved by now? Firing back towards the positions of the enemy is not a solution of the problem, it is a suspension until the next escalation. Nobody knows how long the current state will last.
The Republic of Armenia is neither a military zone nor a border of Artsakh, however the increasingly militarized Nakhichevan, assisted by Turkey, shows other trends: it tries to drag the Republic of Armenia into a state of war as evidenced by the demonstrative military exercises, incitement and shooting at tourism zone.
It seems, the Azerbaijani positions feel comfortable controlling the neutral lane, which they had managed to acquire without loss. The question is not about whose fault it was that the positions had come under the control of Azerbaijan. That kind of direct threats should be given proper answers and proper solutions, and the authorities of the country are obliged to take up the issue.
